Hike Atitlan Volcano

An unparalleled and incredible experience!

Considered an inactive volcano with a regular cone on top and located in the municipality of Santiago Atitlán just before the south of the Tolimán volcano, the Volcán Atitlán offers you an altitude of 3535m, which makes it the highest volcano around the lake and the 8th largest in Guatemala. It has a beautiful jungle which is the natural habitat of the national bird “El Quetzal”, besides amazing landscapes of the lake and the surrounding volcanoes.

We offer you the following options:

  • Hike in 2 days, 1 night camping at the top of the volcano. Departure is at 8:00 am. leaving San Juan with a tuk-tuk to San Pedro and then a boat to Santiago Atitlán. There we will hike for 4/5 hours to the top of the volcano, where we will sleep very close to the summit and can enjoy the sunset. At 4:00 am we get up to climb another hour to the summit and enjoy the sunrise. After sunrise, we descend and return to San Juan in the early afternoon of the next day.
  • Leave at 4:00 am from Mayachik and go by public bus to Santiago Atitlán. From there 4-5 hours uphill, 3 hours downhill, and return at 5 pm.

Difficulty level: 8/10 difficult, one-way trail is 8km.

It Includes a local guide, roundtrip transportation, and entrance fees.

Duration: The average ascent is 5-6 hours and 3 hours of descent.

Recommendations: Bring breakfast, enough water, snacks, a jacket for the cold, a windbreaker or waterproof jacket, gloves, a beret/hat, a headlamp, and hiking boots. You can buy takeaway food packages in our restaurant.

Cost of a hike: Q650 for 1 person; Q500 for 2-3 people; Q400 for 4-5 people.

Cost of a hike with camping: Q750 for 1 person; Q550 for 2-3 people; Q450 for 4-5 people.
